Crosstown Brewing unveils ‘I’m a Ram’ Maibock, a special malty release for spring

“I’m a Ram,” the newest beer from Midtown’s Crosstown Brewing Co., is a copper-hued, malty Maibock, brewed to mark the changing of the seasons.

“Maibocks are traditional German spring celebration beers, and we’ve been wanting to make one for awhile,'” said Clark Ortkiese, Crosstown Brewing’s co-founder.

“These big, malty beers are full of those malty, melanoidin flavors, but they’re still really balanced, and you get just a little of the hop character in there, too.”

I’m a Ram weighs in a 6.8% ABV. It debuted Friday in Crosstown’s taproom, where it’s available in cans and on draft. Crosstown also sent a very limited supply of cans and kegs to Eagle Distributing for the Memphis market.

As for the name, bocks frequently have goat imagery because of a German language pun. And while there are many Memphis GOATs, one in particular was the inspiration.

“We were inspired by the Al Green song, ‘I’m a Ram,’ to get that ram/goat connection,” Ortkiese said.
