‘Chowdah,’ Crosstown’s NEIPA, returns for 4th year with a blend of 4 hops

Crosstown Brewing Co.’s “Chowdah,” a New England-style India Pale Ale, is back for a fourth year, featuring a unique blend of four different hop varieties.

The 2024 edition of this 7%-ABV hazy, juicy beer features Citra, Mosaic, Emerald Spire and a new experimental hop.

Citra and Mosaic are two hops from Washington that should be pretty familiar to most craft beer aficionados. Citra hops deliver intense citrus flavors and aromas, while Mosaic hops impart a more complex blend of tropical fruit, floral and earthy characteristics.

This year’s Chowdah also features Emerald Spire, a Michigan-grown hop whose aromas range from peach to white grape to bubble gum.

Finally, Experimental 09326 hops have berry jam, tropical fruit, grapefruit, and subtle herbal notes.

The combination of the four hops makes this year’s Chowdah unlike any of the prior years’ offerings.

Crosstown co-founder Clark Ortkiese told Memphis Beer Blog that the brewery’s latest Chowdah edition also has a “nice, pillowy mouthfeel from the oats.”

“This beer,” he said, “came out really well, and we’re very excited about it.”

Chowdah will be available starting Friday, Feb. 9, on draft and in 16-oz cans to go at Crosstown’s Midtown taproom, 1264 Concourse Ave.

In addition to the beer launch, musician Bryan Hartley will be on hand from 6 to 9 p.m. Dynamic Duo will also be selling Memphis AF Burritos from 4 to 8 p.m.
