Soul & Spirits Brewery has started canning some of its beers in 12-ounce cans as part of an expansion into Memphis-area Kroger stores.

Like many craft breweries, Soul & Spirits has only been packaging in 16-ounce, or full pint, cans since opening two years ago, with a focus on four-packs. That’s changing with the opportunity to get Soul & Spirits beers in the coolers of Memphis’ largest grocery chain, which prefers to sell the smaller, standard-size cans.

Soul & Spirits is putting its two original flagship beers, Bring it Home and Hoochie Coochie, in six-packs of 12-ounce cans. In addition, Soul & Spirits’ seasonal offerings will get the same treatment, starting with its Oktoberfest beer. For now, Soul & Spirits’ other packaged beers will remain in the larger cans.

Bring it Home is a 4.9% ABV German-style Helles, a crisp, golden lager. Hoochie Coochie is a bigger beer, a 7.1% ABV American India Pale Ale. Meanwhile, Soul & Spirits’ fall seasonal, Danke, is a 5.9%-ABV Märzen lager.

The three beers are headed to nine craft beer-focused Kroger stores in Shelby County in the next week through Ajax Distributing.

Ryan Allen, Soul & Spirits’ master brewer and co-founder, said the expansion to Kroger stores gives more people an opportunity to discover the Downtown Memphis brewery.

“I think we’re going to reach a broader market and reach a whole swath of people who didn’t even know we existed,” Allen said.

Six-packs at Kroger will cost $12.99 to $13.99, Allen said.

In addition to Kroger stores, six-packs of Bring It Home, Hoochie Coochie and Danke will be available for sale in Soul & Spirits’ taproom, 845 N. Main.

In time, you’ll be seeing six-packs in other stores, as well.

“It’s going to roll out in Kroger, but … open up to other locations,” Allen said.

The addition of Kroger stores comes at a busy time for Soul & Spirits, which expanded distribution to Middle and East Tennessee over the summer.

Soul & Spirits signed a distribution deal with Bounty Bev that covers Nashville and eight surrounding counties. In addition, the brewery is partnering with Tennessee Craft Distributors to sell Soul & Spirits beers in Knoxville, Chattanooga and other East Tennessee locales.
