MFS Brewing is letting the good times roll for its first Mardi Gras with a special beer: a King Cake Stout, brewed with cinnamon and vanilla beans.

Memphis Filling Station co-founder Bryan Berretta told Memphis Beer Blog that MFS started with its Within Tolerances Milk Stout as the beer’s base.

“We partnered up with Jeff and Amanda at Memphis Whistle to make the cinnamon extract. They have a friend that grows the cinnamon, which has a very unique earthy and fruity note that really stands out from traditional cinnamon,” Berretta said.

“We then blended it with our vanilla blend of Madagascar, Mexican and Tahitian vanilla beans to create the cake and icing.”

MFS, which canned and kegged the 5.5%-ABV King Cake Stout, has been selling the beer at its Downtown Memphis taproom, 206 GE Patterson, for the last few weeks.

In addition, the beer is available on draft at the Cordova and Downtown locations of the Flying Saucer, as well as Lucchesi’s Beer Garden. Joe’s Wines & Liquor and Kimbrough Wine & Spirits have cans to purchase, and Memphis Whistle has cans available for on-site consumption.

MFS just opened its brick and mortar location in September, so the King Cake Stout was a first for the Memphis Filling Station.

“It was the first time we’ve made it,” Berretta said, adding: “It will most definitely not be the last.”
