9 Memphis breweries among statewide winners in Untappd’s inaugural Community Awards

For the first time ever, Untappd has handed out awards to the breweries with the top-rated beers on its social media platform for beer aficionados.

Nine Memphis breweries, led by Meddlesome Brewing Co. and Soul & Spirits Brewery with six awards each, had beers that earned Tennessee honors in the inaugural Untappd Community Awards.

The awards were given this week to the top three beers in each qualifying substyle across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., plus in the 50 countries with the most Untappd check-ins from 2023.

Beers were ranked according to their average rating from check-ins. To qualify, beers must have received at least 50 check-ins from 50 unique Untappd community members in 2023.

Over 1.5 million beers were rated on Untappd in 2023, and fewer than 1.65% of beers (25,302 total) won awards. Nearly 30% of brewers (7,427 total) had winning beers.

Here are the top-rated beers in Tennessee from Memphis breweries, in order of most awards:

• Ludwig van Beerthoven: #3 Altbier – Traditional in Tennessee with a 3.802 rating in 2023
• Dark Angel: #2 Belgian Strong Golden Ale in Tennessee with a 3.98 rating in 2023

Wiseacre Brewing’s Untappd Community Awards

• Jean de Lis: #3 Lager in Tennessee with a 3.866 rating in 2023
• Watermelon Beach Within Reach: #2 Sour – Berliner Weisse in Tennessee with a 3.853 rating in 2023

Grind City Brewing’s Untappd Community Awards

• Jalapeno Poppy’s Pils: #2 Lager – American Light in Tennessee with a 3.763 rating in 2023

Memphis Made Brewing’s Untappd Community Awards

• Dunkel Phil: #3 Wheat Beer – Dunkelwiezen in Tennessee with a 3.726 rating in 2023
