Starting Thursday, Feb. 15, Urban Consequence Brewing Co. in Midtown is hosting a series of talks that are open to the public called Academics on Tap, where University of Memphis grad students will share their work and expertise with the community.

Thursday’s event, which starts at 5:30 p.m. in Urban Consequence’s taproom, 239 Cooper Street, is about the “generational effects of stress.”

Urban Consequence founder Jeff Sable shared this press release about the series:

Local taproom to feature casual talks by UM scientists

The University of Memphis Psychology Graduate Student Association is partnering with Urban Consequence Brewing Company in Midtown to offer a series of academic-based presentations to the public. They are calling it “Academics on Tap”.

Academics is a familiar theme in the Urban Consequence taproom. The owners are professors at CBU and the University of Memphis, respectively. Many of the servers are alumni of and/or graduate students at CBU and the University of Memphis. Plenty of the taproom’s regulars also have ties to Memphis colleges and universities.

“Since before we opened, we hoped to be able to use the taproom as a venue to share ideas and support the community,” said owner Jeff Sable. Chris Hartless, president of the student group and presenter at Academics on Tap this Thursday, said they hope to “better connect the community with scientific discovery.” He added that students “will speak on topics related to their research, providing insight into current and relevant questions about the human experience.”

Topics planned include generational effects of stress (February), spatial language learning (March), gambling and other risky decision-making (April), and social rewards (May). “We hope people will come listen and interact with these promising young Memphis scientists in a laid-back setting,” Sable said, “and maybe have a beer or two.”

Hartless will lead off this Thursday at 5:30 with a discussion of the generational effects of stress. Future sessions will be posted on Urban Consequence Brewing Company’s Instagram and Facebook feeds.
