A Polar Vortex is arriving in Memphis, and, no, I’m not talking about the sudden chill in the air today.

Grind City Brewing’s latest seasonal beer, Polar Vortex, 7.0% ABV, is a “Cold IPA,” and will be available in cans and on draft starting this week.

Cold IPAs differ from traditional IPAs in that they are made with a lager yeast, instead of an ale yeast, and ferment at lower temperatures.

Cold IPAs are crisper beers but still pack a lot of hops. Polar Vortex was brewed with Chinook, Citra and Idaho-7 hops.

“The beer is refreshing and citrusy with a smooth yet hoppy, bitter finish,” Ian Betti, event director at Grind City, told Memphis Beer Blog.

“It’s the perfect IPA to compliment the cooler temperatures or that Christmas sweater that you’ve been waiting to break out of the closet.”

Polar Vortex will be Grind City’s seasonal offering from November to February. The brewery plans to release a different seasonal beer in March, then a summer beer in either May or June.

Betti said Polar Vortex will be sold in six-pack of 16-oz. cans, and will be available in Kroger stores starting on Wednesday, Nov. 1, and in local liquor stores the first week of November.

The beer will also be available on draft in Grind City’s taproom, 76 Waterworks Ave., and at select locations in the Memphis area.
