A new special release beer for summer, Cannonball Kölsch, is going on sale today, Friday, June 23, in Crosstown Brewing Co.‘s midtown Memphis taproom.

Cannonball Kölsch, 5.2% ABV, is a traditional German-style beer, which Crosstown co-founder Clark Ortkiese said “rides the line between an ale and a lager.”

“This hybrid is clean and crisp like a lager, but has some nice body and slight esters like an ale. We bittered it just a little more than normal to make it really pop,” he said.

Ortkiese said finding a moderate ABV, drinkable beer for summer had been a priority for Crosstown.

“We’ve done a few pilot batches of Kölsch, but never a full-scale batch, so this was a new style on the big system for us,” he said.

“The beauty of this beer is the simplicity.  This beer is all base malt, a bittering hop, finishing hop, Kolsch yeast, and water.”

Cannonball Kölsch will be a taproom exclusive, on draft and in 6-packs of cans to go. The beer goes on sale today when the taproom opens at noon.

Food truck She Shed will be at Crosstown today starting at 4 p.m., and the brewery will also have live music from 5-8 p.m.
