2023 National Homebrew Day: What you need to know about the Big Brew

2023 Big Brew

Next week, homebrewers across the United States, including Memphis, will celebrate National Homebrew Day by participating in the Big Brew.

The American Homebrewers Association created the Big Brew 26 years ago as an annual event to celebrate National Homebrew Day around the world. Earlier, in 1987, Congress declared May 7 as National Homebrew Day.

Big Brew in Memphis

In Memphis, hobbyists from the city’s two homebrew clubs — the Bluff City Brewers & Connoisseurs and Memphis Brewers Association — will mark the occasion by meeting up on Saturday, May 6, at Hampline Brewing, for a day of grains, hops, yeast and water, the essential ingredients of beer.

For brewers who sign up through the Memphis Brewers Association, Hampline will be providing base wort (5 or 10 gallons). Brewers will be responsible for ingredients like steeping grains, hops and yeast, plus gear like a pot, burner and chiller.

AHA’s official Big Brew recipe

Each year, the American Homebrewers Association releases an official recipe for the Big Brew. This year’s recipe is Nearly Nirvana Pale Ale, a Cascade-hopped American pale with similarities to Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale.

However, you’re not restricted to brewing the official recipe on Big Brew day. Whether you’re brewing solo or with family and friends, fire up the kettle, enjoy the warmer weather and have fun making your own beer.
